Martin Walfisz distracted by games, technology and politics.

I just started my vacation and finally had the time to write up another issue with interesting random shinies. I hope you’ll have a lazy Sunday with plenty of time to read and get inspired. Now, I’m soon off the the summerhouse (where the rain is just pouring down). Wishing you a wonderful summer! :D

The Rest of the Auto Industry Is in Trouble | Loup Ventures
This article has a very apt title. It’s obvious, imho, that Tesla’s Model 3 (combined with their Supercharger network) is a perfect example of Christensen’s disruptive innovation. I have that model myself, and it’s unbelievable how far ahead of every other car it is. And car buyers are starting to notice; why buy an automobile with technology based on explosions, when you can get a much cheaper-to-drive BEV at a slightly higher entry cost? And it’s so much more fun.

Countries agree regulations for automated driving
My interest in electric vehicles of course also extends to self-driving cars (which, in theory, are not limited to BEVs). Although I can appreciate that there certainly needs to be some regulation, the lawmakers in Europe are slowing down progress in a field that will have a profound effect on the environment and the layout and density of cities. The future can’t come soon enough.

Foundation — Teaser | Apple TV+
The Foundation was probably my favourite sci-fi book series as a teenager (I must have read all the books 4-5 times over the years). I’m very curious to how it will be adapted to TV, but after seeing the teaser I don’t have high expectations. Here’s hoping I’m wrong.

Valorant review - exacting, infuriating, sublime • Eurogamer.net
Here’s a game I’m definitely going to try during my vacation. As a game developer I have the deepest respect for studios that take the time (and have the money to spend) to make it just right. I know first-hand how hard it is to re-build every part of a game until it is truly great. Blizzard are masters at this, and I’m hoping that Riot delivers. I’ll see in the next few weeks. :)

The DeanBeat: Sony sets the bar for the next-generation console war | VentureBeat
I’ve been wondering for a decade when consoles will stop having physical discs. And what a simple and brilliant solution Sony came up with for the next generation. Sell the PS5 with disc support in markets where discs are still being sold, and offer a disc-less version in markets where digital distribution is the norm. (The disc-less version looks soooo much better.)

Maker's Schedule, Manager's Schedule
I stumbled upon this 2009 Paul Graham post the other day. It certainly puts the finger on one important difference between makers and managers – and why they might have such a hard time connecting. For many years I’ve been on a manager’s schedule (and it won’t change any time soon), but I sure long for the days when I had the time to just make something for hours without any disruptions; getting into a creative flow is so satisfying, but it rarely happens nowadays. Maybe when I retire. ;)

Board Diversity - AVC
Here’s some great actionable advice on the composition of company boards by Fred Wilson, one of the most notable VCs in the US. If you ever find yourself in a position of influencing the election of board members, please take this advice to heart. The board diversity problem is a symptom of a much broader problem around lack of diversity in founders that get funded and lack of diversity in VC firms. Most startup boards are made up of a few founders and a few VCs. No wonder you have no diversity on the board.
